Privacy
Short version: we don’t collect anything that identifies you. No account, no cookies, no tracking.
Who is responsible
Timeless Visit is a free side project run by Romain Bruyère, a private individual in Belgium, who is responsible for your data (the controller). Write to contact@timelessvisit.com for any question about your data.
Our server is rented from Hetzner Online GmbH in Germany, which processes data only on our instructions, under a data processing agreement.
What our server receives
- The area you look at. To show places, your browser sends us the edges of the map, the categories you picked and your language, and, when you open a shared link, the place it points to. We don’t link this to you.
- Technical logs. Our server (Hetzner, in Germany) writes error messages, which can include the IP address of the request that caused them, and the IP address of anyone who sends more than 120 requests a minute (to stop abuse). Ordinary visits are not logged with your IP address. Logs are deleted after 14 days at most, sooner if they grow past their size limit. Nobody reads them except to fix errors or stop abuse. Reason: keeping the site secure and working (legitimate interest). You can object to this: write to us.
What stays in your browser
- My day. The places you save are kept in your browser’s local storage, on your device only. They are never sent to us. Remove them in the app or by clearing this site’s data in your browser.
- Near me. Your browser asks before sharing your location. It is used in your browser to move the map; we only receive the map area around you, as for any other area.
- No cookies. We set none.
Other services your browser talks to
To show the map, search and photos, your browser loads them directly from these services. Like any website, they receive your IP address and what is requested, and handle it under their own privacy policy. We need them to show the map, search and photos (legitimate interest).
-
OpenFreeMap (Hyperknot Software Kft., Hungary;
tiles.openfreemap.org): the map itself. It sees which map area is loaded. OpenFreeMap privacy policy -
Photon by komoot (komoot GmbH, Germany;
photon.komoot.io): place search. It sees what you type in the search box. komoot privacy policy -
Wikimedia Foundation (United States;
upload.wikimedia.org,thumb.wikimedia.org): photos of places. Your request for a photo goes to the United States. Wikimedia privacy policy
Links to other sites (directions, a place’s website, OpenStreetMap) follow those sites’ own rules once you open them.
If you email us
Emails to contact@timelessvisit.com pass through Cloudflare (Email Routing, United States, covered by the EU-US Data Privacy Framework) to our mailbox at Gmail (Google, United States, covered by the EU-US Data Privacy Framework). We use them only to answer you, and delete them 12 months after the last message, unless we need them longer for a dispute.
Visitor statistics
We count visits from the requests your browser makes anyway to use the site: no extra script, no cookie, nothing read from your device. For each page you load, each search of the map and each place you open from a shared link, our server notes the time, the page or request (for a search: the map area, categories and language), whether it worked, the type of device (phone, tablet, computer or search engine robot) and the website that sent you here (its address only, such as google.com). It doesn’t note your IP address, and it works out the type of device from your browser’s name without keeping that name.
Every hour these notes are added up into totals, such as “40 visits between 10:00 and 11:00, 25 of them from phones”, and only the totals are kept. The notes themselves are deleted after 14 days at most. As nothing tells visitors apart, we don’t know how many different people visit, and nothing is ever linked to you. Reason: knowing how much the site is used and what for, to improve it (legitimate interest).
Your rights
You can ask us for a copy of the data we hold about you, have it corrected or deleted, ask us to limit its use, and object to our use of it based on legitimate interest. As we keep nothing that identifies you, there is usually nothing to hand over, but do ask: contact@timelessvisit.com. You can also complain to a data protection authority; in Belgium, the Data Protection Authority.
Changes
When this changes, we update this page and the date at the top.
